2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Prototype Brings Sporty, Euro Styling to North American Debut in New York

March 22, 2016 - New York

  • New Turbo technology for manual transmissions confirmed for entire 2017 Civic lineup
  • New Civic hatchback prototype offers best look yet at Euro sport hatch-inspired compact car
  • Assertive stance and distinctive new design establishes 10th generation as the sportiest Civic ever

The next-generation Civic Hatchback, with its striking design and the promise of a sporty, European-inspired driving experience, today made its North American debut in prototype form just a day before the 2016 New York International Auto Show. American Honda Motor Co., Inc. also confirmed that it will marry the all-new 1.5-liter turbo engine to its 6-speed manual transmission for more sporty and dynamic performance. The arrival of the production 2017 Civic Hatchback later this year marks the continued rollout of the 10th-generation Civic lineup, the sportiest and most expansive family of Civics in the car's 44-year history. The Civic Sedan was recently named the 2016 North American Car of the Year, and sales of Civic are up 37 percent through the first two months of 2016.

Being built on the same world-class platform as the 10th-generation Civic Sedan, the 2017 Civic Hatchback will be defined by an unparalleled combination of sportiness, efficiency and utility, with distinctive styling and premium features that enthusiasts demand. The five-door hatchback will feature one powertrain for the U.S. market, a 1.5-liter DOHC direct-injected Turbo engine that can be mated to either a sporty CVT or a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission.

"The Civic Hatchback wraps the 10-generation Civic platform and five-door hatchback utility in emotional, Euro-inspired styling," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Offered with the first application of the 1.5-liter turbo engine paired with a manual transmission, this sportiest Civic to date will attract a whole new set of enthusiasts buyers to the model and Honda brand."

The Civic Hatchback will launch later this year as the third new Civic variant, joining the 2016 Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe. The 10th-generation Civic lineup will be rounded out in 2017 with the arrival of Civic Si variants and the radical new Civic Type R.

The 2017 Civic Hatchback was developed by the joint efforts of Honda R&D teams in Europe and Japan and is expected to bring new buyers into the Honda showroom here in the U.S.

"We knew that we needed to create a striking and stand-out exterior design that challenged conventional European compact styling while staying true to the original Civic's core values," said Daisuke Tsutamori, chief exterior stylist for the 2017 Civic Hatchback Prototype. "This vehicle represents a marriage of distinctive and sporty design, rewarding driving dynamics and versatile practicality."

New larger and wider wheels and tires give a feeling of an assured stance, while the long wheelbase, short overhangs and sleek cabin area further add to the dynamic feel of the exterior. At the front of the car, a short overhang with large air intakes presents a sharp and aggressive interpretation of Honda's family face. LED headlights and daytime running lights flow from beneath the boldly sculpted hood into the muscular front wheel arches.

The sleek and swept-back body lines continue along the side of the car with a crease that incorporates front and rear door handles before culminating in the distinctive C-shaped LED rear lights. A second, lower character line extends from behind the front wheels up through the doors and meets the rear wheel arches, emphasizing the car's dynamic forward-leaning stance. At the rear, the bumper incorporates angular creases and vents, designed to echo the aggressively styled nature of the rest of the car.

The 2017 Civic Hatchback will be produced exclusively at the Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) plant in Swindon.

  • Honda-exclusive features including In-Bed Trunk®, dual-action tailgate and the industry's first in-bed audio system make Ridgeline the ultimate tailgating vehicle

Honda today unveiled the all-new 2017 Ridgeline truck at the North American International Auto Show, once again challenging conventional thinking in the pickup truck market with Honda-exclusive features, design and technology that help Ridgeline set new benchmarks for versatility, capability and comfort in a midsize pickup.

"We are bringing our unique technology and original thinking to the market in a new and challenging concept for a Honda pickup," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "We think we've got a better idea, a truck that uses its unibody construction and Honda packaging magic to deliver more of the things that many of today's truck customers want and need with none of the things they don't."

Designed, developed and manufactured in America, the new Ridgeline will launch in the first half of 2016 with a combination of features and capabilities unlike anything else on the market today, including:

  • Superior on-road performance - with the segment's best handling, ride quality, cabin quietness and all-weather traction capabilities - courtesy of its unibody construction, sophisticated chassis, and available i-VTM4™ torque-vectoring AWD system
  • Class-leading space - with the largest and most versatile cabin and the only 4-foot-wide flat bed space in the midsize pickup segment, along with payload capacity rivaling top competitors
  • Innovative and class-exclusive features, including an In-Bed Trunk™, dual-action tailgate and the industry's first in-bed audio system - making Ridgeline the ultimate tailgating vehicle
  • Targeted top-in-class acceleration, EPA fuel economy ratings and third-party collision safety ratings, and featuring Honda's next-generation ACE™ body structure and available Honda Sensing™ suite of safety and driver-assist technologies
  • Leading edge connectivity with 8-inch Display Audio featuring Apple Car Play® and Android Auto™ compatibility

Advanced Chassis, Powertrain and All-Wheel-Drive

The new Ridgeline is based on Honda's Global Light Truck platform with its rigid yet lightweight unibody construction, next-generation ACE™ body structure and sophisticated, fully independent suspension, delivering a higher level of ride and handling refinement than conventional body-on-frame designs. The Ridgeline will be powered by a 3.5-liter, direct-injectedi-VTEC™ V-6 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, providing top-in-class powertrain refinement and targeting best-in-class acceleration performance and segment-leading EPA fuel economy ratings.

The Ridgeline also will be available for the first time in both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations. All-wheel-drive models will utilize Honda's i-VTM4™ torque vectoring AWD technology, featuring Intelligent Terrain Management with Normal, Sand, Snow and Mud modes, providing robust medium-duty off-road and towing capability with superior on-road, all-weather handling, traction and performance.

Sophisticated, Versatile and Spacious Cabin

Inside, the Ridgeline boasts the largest, most versatile and sophisticated cabin in a midsize 4-door pickup, featuring high-grade materials and finishes, available leather trim and all the latest technologies that Honda has to offer, including tri-zone climate control, push button start, a full-color TFT center meter and available 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen with Apple Car Play and Android Auto compatibility.

The Ridgeline's 60/40-split and folding second-row seat provides the ultimate versatility for people- and cargo-hauling utility. With the seats folded down, the Ridgeline will comfortably carry up to five people while still accommodating long items, like a set of golf clubs, under the rear seat. Folding up one or both sides of the 60/40-split seat bottom opens up the back to carry tall and bulky items.

A Bed Like No Other

The Ridgeline bed offers pickup users unmatched versatility in a midsize 4-door pickup. At 5' wide and 5'4" long (5.4 inches wider and 4 inches longer than the previous generation Ridgeline), the 2017 Honda Ridgeline has the only 4-foot wide flat bed space (with 48 inches between the rear wheel arches) in the midsize pickup class, allowing for flat hauling of items like plywood sheeting or drywall. The Ridgeline will also offer payload capacity rivaling top competitors, approaching 1,600 pounds, with final specifications to be released closer to launch.

The composite, UV-stabilized and scratch-resistant bed also boasts a number of available Honda-exclusive features that add to its incredible versatility, including an In-Bed Trunk™, dual-action tailgate, available 400-watt AC power inverter and the industry's first in-bed audio system.

The Ridgeline's standard, lockable In-Bed Trunk provides secure storage space with no compromise to bed utility and now features a fully flat floor while still including a drain plug for easier cleaning and evacuation of water from the trunk. The dual action tailgate is hinged both at the bottom and along its left side, opening down or to the side, which enables easier loading and unloading of heavy and bulky items without having to reach over the open tailgate. The bed also features eight 350-pound tie down cleats and an available 400-watt power inverter, located behind an access panel in the right bed wall, with the capacity to recharge power tools or energize a tailgate blender or flat screen TV.

A first for any pickup, the new in-bed audio system, together with the In-Bed Trunk and available 400-watt power inverter, makes Ridgeline the ultimate tailgating vehicle. The new in-bed audio system utilizes six exciters located inside the bed walls, in place of conventional speakers, pumping out sound from the Ridgeline's audio head unit, with up to 540 watts of power.

Top-Level Safety Performance

Featuring Honda's next-generation ACE™ body structure, advanced airbag systems and available Honda Sensing™ suite of safety and driver-assist technologies, the new Ridgeline will target the highest available collision safety ratings - an NCAP 5-star Overall Vehicle Score from the NHTSA and a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the IIHS. Honda Sensing™ technologies available on the 2017 Ridgeline include Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS).  All Ridgeline models will feature a multi-angle rearview camera as standard equipment and upper trims will be available with either Honda LaneWatch™ or Blind Spot Information system.

Ridgeline Development and Manufacturing

Like the first generation Honda Ridgeline, the all-new 2017 Ridgeline was designed and developed by Honda R&D Americas and will be produced by Honda Manufacturing of Alabama in Lincoln, Alabama.

Jan 11, 2016           -           DETROIT

  • Ground-up redesign was developed and is built in North America
  • Second NACOTY win for the model after 2006 Civic win a decade ago

The all-new 2016 Honda Civic has earned the prestigious 2016 North American Car of the Year Award. This win for the Civic is the second for the model in the award's history, following a win for the 2006 Civic a decade ago when it shared the stage with the 2006 Ridgeline, winner of that year's Truck of the Year award. In total, eleven Honda models have been named "finalists" for NACOTY awards since their inception in 1994, the most of any brand outside of the Detroit Big 3 automakers.

"The all-new Civic was developed and is built in North America, making this North American Car of the Year win even sweeter," said Jeff Conrad, Honda Division senior vice president and general manager. "Civic is a cornerstone of the Honda lineup, and we're delighted that the automotive press has recognized the new levels of styling, performance, advanced technology, safety and value that characterize the new Civic."

The North American Car of the Year Award is given by a group of 53 international automotive journalists. The award is unique because instead of being given by a single publication, radio or television station, it is given by automotive journalists from the United States and Canada. Presented each year at the opening of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, it recognizes the most outstanding car of the year based on factors including innovation, design, safety performance, handling, driver satisfaction and value.

Truly all-new, the 2016 Civic features a new vehicle architecture; sporty and sophisticated new interior and exterior styling; a more spacious and high-quality cabin; two advanced new engines; and a host of new available premium features and technologies, including the first application of both Apple CarPlay®1 and Android Auto™2 in a compact car sold anywhere in the world. Further, with the addition of Honda Sensing™ safety and driver-assistive technologies and the first application of Honda turbo engine technology to Civic, the 2016 Civic offers buyers a wider range of options than ever before.

With vehicle development led by Honda R&D Americas, Inc. and Civic Sedan and Coupe production in Indiana and Ontario, Canada, the new 10th-generation Civic firmly has its roots in North America. The majority of Civics sold in the United States will be produced and assembled using domestic and globally sourced parts in the United States and Canada. The Civic 5-door, set to debut in the near future, will be produced at Honda's Swindon Plant in the United Kingdom.

New Honda Road Readers Program Designed to Encourage Children to Use Their Imaginations During Drives

Honda Road Readers, a new app (available on Apple® and Android™) providing Honda drivers free access to children's audiobooks to expose children to great literature and foster their imaginations. Anintroductory video to the program will be promoted on Honda's social channels, using the hashtag #HondaRoadReaders.

"The goal for the Honda Road Readers program is to provide an educational and entertaining alternative to the usual car ride and inspire young listeners to vividly imagine," said Susie Rossick, Assistant Vice President, Honda/Acura Regional Media and Marketing at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "This effort is a powerful demonstration of our commitment to the brand's 'Power of Dreams' philosophy by encouraging our customers and their families to dream big together."

To add to the experience, most books are supported with critical-thinking questions aimed at getting parents and children to dive deeper into each story. Honda has also teamed up with the National Teacher of the Year Program run by the Council of Chief State School Officers to provide a curated selection of books that will be both entertaining and intellectually stimulating.

"Students learn best when they have enthusiastic teachers, and parents are a child's first and most important teacher. Honda Road Readers will help families share the infectious fun of reading together on journeys of the mind, the imagination and the heart," says Rebecca Mieliwocki, the 2012 National Teacher of the Year and 7th-grade English teacher in Burbank, Calif. "Reading not only boosts academic success but also awakens a person's social and civic sense. They help us know and be mesmerized by the world around us and give us a sense of how we fit in. Simply put, books change lives for the better."

Honda recently commissioned a surveysi of more than 1,500 parents with one or more children ages 5 to 16 and learned that 77 percent of parents think listening to books or stories read aloud is very important for children's cognitive development and developing listening skills. The survey also revealed that parents (69 percent) are concerned that their children are spending too much time in front of screens (cell phones, computers and TV). They are equally aware that their children are not reading books for fun and have fewer opportunities to use their imagination these days.

A Honda Road Readers infographic summarizing the survey findings can be viewed on Honda'sPinterest and Tumblr pages.

Any Honda owner can easily access the Honda Road Readers program. First, owners go towww.hondaroadreaders.com to register. Owners will then be directed to download the Honda Road Readers app in the Apple or Android store. Next, owners will either scan or key in their 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN). Honda owners will have access to five free audiobooks per Honda VIN aimed at children 5 to 16 years old for one year, the first being J. M. Barrie's classic Peter Pan and followed by four other titles of their choice.

The app experience features 10 rotating National Teacher of the Year featured books and several audiobook categories including fantasy/adventure, mystery, science fiction and teens.

To further support Honda Road Readers in December, the brand will debut a social video, titled "Imagination Inspiration," featuring Jeff Kinney, the bestselling author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kidseries. Honda spoke with the author, just before he departed on a global tour for book 10, about his new bookstore, imagination and the Honda Road Readers program

About Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards

The Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards are designed to provide a significant service to American new-car buyers by identifying the cream of the crop of all available 2016 model-year vehicles. The awards are the culmination of a year-long regimen of expert vehicle evaluation and testing of nearly every new vehicle available in America, along with analysis of a broad swath of vehicle-related data, including vehicle pricing/transaction prices, 5-Year Cost to Own data (which includes depreciation, insurance, maintenance, financing, fuel, fees and taxes for new cars), consumer reviews and ratings, and vehicle sales/retail sales information. Of more than 300 new-car models available for 2016, Kelley Blue Book's expert editors initially narrowed the field to 49 Best Buy Award Finalists in 12 major vehicle categories, and then spent several weeks testing and evaluating all of the finalists head-to-head to ultimately determine the winners. Honda Named "2016 Best SUV Brand" by U.S. News & World Report for CR-V, all-new HR-V and Pilot

"Honda wins the Best SUV Brand award on the strength of its entire SUV lineup," said Jamie Page Deaton, Managing Editor, U.S. News Best Cars. "The HR-V, CR-V and Pilot are all consistently ranked at the top of their respective classes, as automotive journalists are impressed with the utility, comfort and family-friendly features that all three offer. No matter what class SUV shoppers are searching in, Honda has a model worth considering."

This accolade comes as Honda continues to strengthen and expand its light-truck lineup, which began with the launch of the refreshed 2015 CR-V in the fall of 2014, followed by the spring arrival of the all-new HR-V crossover and summer introduction of a redesigned, third-generation Pilot. On the strength of these products, Honda is on track for record results in 2016, with light truck sales reaching a new high of 550,210 units through October, a 13.6 percent gain over year-ago results; with CR-V on track to earn the title of America's best-selling SUV for the 4th consecutive year.

"This recognition of Honda as the Best SUV Brand validates our effort to produce world-class SUVs to meet the needs and desires of families of any size," said Jeff Conrad, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Honda Division. "Honda is committed to providing fuel efficient, safe and fun products with the quality and reliability to meet the needs of our discerning customers."

The awards recognize the brands whose vehicles perform the best on an overall basis within four major categories of the U.S. News vehicle rankings: Cars, SUVs, Trucks and Luxury. The Best Vehicle Brands methodology uses the combined overall scores from the U.S. News Best Cars rankings across all models in each of the award classes. The overall rankings score is based on an analysis of published, credible reviews of a given model from the automotive press, as well as safety and reliability data.

The 2015 Honda CR-V, with its new direct-injected engine, more refined interior and first application of Honda Sensing™ safety and driver-assistive technologies, was named as 2015 Motor Trend Sport Utility of the Year. The Honda HR-V brought Honda's packaging magic to a new and growing market segment, and quickly became the subcompact SUV segment's hottest selling model. On the heels of HR-V came thee redesigned 2016 Pilot, Honda's flagship SUV, offering more top-in-class efficiency and safety ratings performance in a sleek new design.

The CR-V, HR-V and Pilot are all produced exclusively in North America at Honda's plants in Lincoln, Alabama (Pilot), East Liberty, Ohio (CR-V) and Celaya, Mexico

(HR-V). Honda R&D Americas, Inc. is also responsible for development of the Pilot, Ridgeline and Odyssey models and led development of the all-new 2016 Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe.

MARKHAM, ON., Aug. 21, 2015 - The fully redesigned 2016 Honda Pilot has received a 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when equipped with optional front crash prevention, bringing Honda one step closer to fulfilling the company's goal to be the first three-row mainstream SUV with the highest available U.S. government (NCAP) and IIHS safety ratings. This U.S IIHS distinction includes a top rating of GOOD in five IIHS crash test modes including a top score of GOOD in the Insurance Institute's stringent small overlap frontal crash test. The 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation is awarded to vehicles that also have an available front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating from the Institute. The 2016 Pilot offers an available frontal crash prevention system that earns a top rating of superior.

"The 2016 Pilot is not only the most technologically advanced Honda vehicle on the road today, but the top choice for family SUV buyers interested in safety performance," said Dave Gardner, senior vice president of operations, Honda Canada Inc. "We've delivered to customers the features that will help keep their precious cargo safe while on the road."

Available on Pilot LX AWD trims and above, Honda Sensing™ technologies can help improve drivers' situational awareness with its various systems, which include the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Road Departure Mitigation (RDM). These systems benefit from the adoption of a sensor fusion technology integrating the capabilities of a windshield-mounted monocular camera and front grille-mounted millimeter wave radar system to provide enhanced sensing with the ability to identify and anticipate multiple collision scenarios, including those involving a pedestrian. When the system anticipates a collision or road departure, it can initiate warnings and, in certain instances, initiate emergency braking and steering.

In addition, the 2016 Pilot adopts the latest generation of Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure along with a new "3-bone" underbody frame design and new hot-stamped ultra-high strength steel door rings. Together with Honda Sensing™, these engineering features and technologies deliver major gains to the Pilot's collision avoidance and collision protection capabilities.

Standard safety equipment on all Honda models include Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) electronic stability control system, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Brake Assist, frontal airbags, side airbags, side-curtain airbags and a front seat design that can help reduce the severity of neck injury in the event of a rear collision.

Honda Canada Presented with Four Value Awards at the Canadian International Auto Show

ALG recognizes Honda CR-V and Odyssey for Best Residual Value

Honda Fit and Odyssey awarded Canadian Black Book's Best Retained Value

TORONTO, ON (February 12, 2015) - As Canadian automotive media gather to open the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, Honda received four combined awards from Canadian Black Book (CBB) and ALG for overall best retained value and best residual value. The segment awards are received for vehicle quality, reliability and overall value.

"Hona Canada is honoured to be recognized by CBB and ALG for their prestigious value awards," said Dave Gardner, senior vice president of operations at Honda Canada. "The distinction speaks to the promise of our core brands - reliability, durability and quality - and provides our customers with the knowledge that they are purchasing the highest quality vehicles."

ALG Awards

ALG's Residual Value Awards honour the vehicles that are forecast to retain the highest percentage of MSRP after a four-year period for mainstream brands. Award recipients are chosen after a careful evaluation of vehicle criteria, including segment competition, historical vehicle performance and industry trends. Awards are given in 22 vehicle segment categories and two brand categories (Mainstream and Premium). This year's winners include:

•    Compact Utility - Honda CR-V

•    Minivan - Honda Odyssey

Canadian Black Book Awards

The Canadian Black Book 'Best Retained Value Awards' acknowledge vehicles that retain the highest percentage of their original MSRP after four years.  For 2015, this distinctive award program analyzed model year 2011 vehicles in 20 different categories. CBB's awards guide consumers who are looking for vehicles that hold their value best, thereby reducing the total cost of vehicle ownership…a critical consideration when purchasing a vehicle. This year's winners include:

•    Sub-Compact Car - Honda Fit

•    Minivan - Honda Odyssey

Honda Debuts Sportiest Civic Design in Brand History with 10th-Generation Civic Concept at New York International Auto Show

Today Honda unveiled its ultra-sporty Civic Concept at the New York International Auto Show as the brand prepares to launch its completely reimagined 10th-Generation Civic models beginning this fall. With a sharper focus on spirited performance and class-leading versatility, the new Civic lineup will include Civic Sedan, Coupe and Si models along with the return of the Civic hatchback, followed by the launch of a new Civic Type-R as the performance flagship of the Civic lineup. The new Civic also will be the first North American model to apply new VTEC® Turbo engines from the company's Earth Dreams Technology™ powertrain series.

"The new Civic will be, flat out, the most dynamic, the most technologically advanced and the most refined and stylish Civic we've ever made," said Dave Gardner, senior vice president of operations, Honda Canada Inc. "We couldn't be prouder to be the global manufacturing lead for this epic vehicle, and they'll be built by Canadians right here in our renowned Alliston, Ontario facility."

The Civic Concept provides a tantalizing glimpse forward to the thrilling design direction for the all-new 10th-generation Civic lineup launching in Canada this fall. Featuring a longer wheelbase and lower, wider stance, the new Civic emphasizes its aggressive personality and engaging experience behind the wheel. Proportionally it boasts a longer hood, a shorter front overhang, a more set-back greenhouse and a shorter rear deck, lending the Civic Coupe a more athletic and "in motion" appearance.

The low and wide proportions are underscored by its more aggressive wheel-to-body relationship and pronounced fender arches. Its sporty and expressive face is highlighted by bright new LED headlights flanking the "Flying H" Honda grille which is supported by deeply sculpted lower air intakes.

"Charismatic, connected and athletic, our goal was to create a design that is emotional and sporty yet with a sense of timelessness and simplicity," said Guy Melville-Brown, Chief Exterior designer of the Civic concept, Honda R&D Americas, Inc. "In this we set out to create a vehicle that goes beyond the superficial and embraces the very philosophy of what a true Civic should be, a real game changer."

The 10th-generation Civic is based on a compact platform that targets benchmark levels of efficiency, dynamic performance, safety and production efficiency. Leveraging this new platform in conjunction with new Earth Dreams Technology™ powertrains - including a new 1.5-liter VTEC® Turbo engine with direct injection, a short-shifting 6-speed manual transmission, and a new, more sporty and efficient continuously variable transmission (CVT) - the Civic will target class-leading fuel economy ratings and fun-to-drive performance with near-luxury levels of cabin quietness and ride refinement.

The new Civic will also target class-leading levels of safety performance and will offer the Honda Sensing™ suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies, including Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Multi-Angle Rearview Camera, Adaptive Cruise Control and Honda LaneWatch™, along with Honda's next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure.

The new Civic marks the first time that development of both the sedan and coupe models is being led by a North American R&D team, with design led by a team from Honda's Los Angeles design studio and development centered in the company's Raymond, Ohio vehicle development centre The North American version of the Civic Sedan will be produced in Alliston, Ontario and Greensburg, Indiana.  The Civic Coupe and Si models will also be manufactured in Alliston. It also marks a milestone and for the first time HCM serves as the global lead plant for the Civic Sedan and Coupe production. The VTEC Turbo engine will be produced in Alliston Ontario as well as Anna, Ohio. The CVT will be produced in Russells Point, Ohio. Together, these four Honda plants have invested in new equipment, processes and training to prepare for new Civic production, which will use domestic and globally sourced parts. Production of the five-door hatchback will take place at the company's Swindon, UK plant.

Honda is in the midst of a series of major product launches that began with the freshened CR-V - 2015 Motor Trend Sport Utility of the Year - and continues with the summer launches of the all-new 2016 Honda HR-V crossover and the redesigned 2016 Honda Pilot SUV. This will be followed by the new Civic release beginning this fall.

HONDA OF CANADA MFG. EXPANDS EXPORT DESTINATIONS WITH EUROPEAN SPEC CR-V

ALLISTON, ON (March 30, 2015) - Honda of Canada Mfg. (HCM), a division of Honda Canada Inc., announced today that it will produce the next generation CR-V model for the European market.  This will be the first time that HCM will export vehicles to Europe.

Today's news follows Honda's recent announcement of a significant three year investment to innovate its Canadian facilities with new technologies and processes to prepare for the next generation Honda Civic and CR-V.  The Canadian facility is the global lead plant for the next generation Honda Civic, Canada's best-selling passenger car for the past 17 years.  An additional manufacturing milestone came recently on March 26, 2015, as the seven millionth vehicle was built at HCM.

"Honda is thrilled to once again have good news for automotive manufacturing in Canada by broadening our production portfolio to include exports to the European market," said Jerry Chenkin, President and CEO of Honda Canada Inc.  "This expansion decision was made possible due to our deep, mature, and rich talent pool with nearly 30 years of automotive manufacturing experience. We are so proud that our Canadian associates have the reputation of producing high quality vehicles that will meet the needs of the discerning European customer."

The announcement further solidifies Honda's already deep roots and commitment to Canada.  This export plan leverages Honda's previous investment announcement and therefore does not require significant capital investment. The creation of new jobs will be modest, however the agreement marks an important broadening of HCM's export destinations, as well as securing highly skilled jobs in the region and providing additional opportunities for Honda's Canadian supply chain.

"The negotiation of a free trade agreement with Europe by the Government of Canada under CETA (Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) was a catalyst for our decision to export CR-Vs. These opportunities will open new markets for our high quality vehicles from Canada and help keep us competitive in the global environment," added Chenkin.

The announcement today was attended by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Minister of International Trade, Ed Fast.

Honda of Canada Mfg. has the capacity to produce 390,000 Civic and CR-V models annually for the Canadian and North American markets, as well as for export.  Of these, approximately 100,000, Canadian-built Civic and CR-V units are sold in Canada every year.  HCM also produces 260,000 four-cylinder engines annually.

Honda builds its seven-millionth vehicle at Alliston plant

MARKHAM, ON (March 27, 2015) - Honda is celebrating the hard work and dedication of generations of Associates, as the company announces it has built its seven-millionth vehicle in Canada. This impressive feat took place during the company's 29th year of Canadian vehicle production in Alliston, Ontario, home to Honda of Canada Mfg (HCM).

Honda became the first Japanese automaker to manufacture cars in Canada in 1986 when the company opened the doors of its Alliston, Ontario plant. Since then, HCM has manufactured several models including the Honda Accord, Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline, as well as Acura EL, CSX and ZDX vehicles. The plant currently builds Honda CR-Vs and Civics, Canada's best-selling passenger car for 17 consecutive years.

"More than 1.8 million Honda Civics have been proudly parked in driveways all over this country," said Dave Gardner, senior vice president of operations, Honda Canada Inc. "Our plant capacity was 50,000 vehicles when we started and we're now building in excess of 390,000 vehicles per year. This growth is attributed to the superior craftsmanship of the highly skilled Associates who have worked with us over the years to produce the quality and reliability that Honda customers truly value."

Honda Canada gives back

To mark the seven-millionth Honda vehicle built in Canada, the company will donate the grey 2015 Honda Civic EX sedan to a registered non-profit charity in the coming months through the Honda Canada Foundation, which provides annual funding to registered non-profit charities across Canada in support of science- and engineering-based education, environment and family initiatives.

Honda is committed to giving back to the communities where its associates and customers live, work and play and is involved with such programs as Earth Rangers Bring Back the Wild, Junior Red Riders, Let's Talk Science, CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish, Make-A-Wish® Canada and the Ontario Science Centre.
